If you've lived in Penang long enough, you've probably been to Youth Park at least once. Maybe your parents brought you as a kid. Maybe you've jogged past the entrance a dozen times without stopping. Or maybe a friend keeps saying "kita pergi Youth Park la" and you've never actually gone. Either way, it's time we give this place the proper shoutout it deserves. A Green Escape That's Been Around Since the 70sOfficially known as City Park or Municipal Park, most Penangites still call it Penang Youth Park. And for good reason. The park was first conceived in the 1970s as a safe, welcoming space for Penang's younger residents, somewhere to gather, socialise, and just be active. The location? A disused quarry site, much like the nearby Penang Botanic Gardens, transformed from an industrial scar into a proper green community space. Clever idea, and it worked. Decades on, the park has seen upgrades and improvements, but the heart of it remains the same, a spacious, community-first outdoor space that belongs to everyone. Getting ThereThe good news? Entry is free, and it's open 24 hours a day, every day. Youth Park is about a 20-minute drive from George Town and 10 minutes from Gurney Drive. The easiest way to get there is by Grab or your own car, there's a main car park right at the entrance. Public buses don't go all the way in, so unless you're up for a 20-minute walk from the nearest stop, save your energy for inside the park instead. One more tip: Youth Park is only about 1km from Penang Botanic Gardens. If you have the time, it's very easy (and very worth it) to combine both in one outing. What's Actually InsideThis is where most people get surprised. Youth Park isn't just a grassy field with some benches. It's a full multi-activity outdoor space, and here's a quick rundown of what you'll find:
Bring a Picnic (But Watch Your Bag)One of the most beloved things to do at Youth Park is the simplest: bring a picnic, find a patch of grass, and just stay awhile. Families have been doing this here for generations, and there's something really nice about that tradition continuing. There's also a small café on-site if you forget to pack food, snacks and drinks available, cash only. How Long Should You Spend? For a casual walk around the park, an hour or two is plenty. But if you're factoring in a swim, a skate session, some badminton, and a picnic lunch, you could easily spend a full half-day here and still feel like you didn't see everything. Don't rush it. That's kind of the point. A Good Spot for Runners & Active FolksIf you're part of the Penang running or cycling community, Youth Park deserves a regular spot in your rotation. The traffic-free paths are clean and comfortable for morning runs, the grounds are well-maintained, and the atmosphere at sunrise, trees, fresh air, the occasional monkey in the background, is honestly hard to beat. It also works well as a warm-up or cool-down location before or after a Penang Hill climb, or a visit to the Botanic Gardens nearby. Fifty years in, Youth Park is still doing exactly what it was built to do: giving Penangites a reason to get outside. That's worth something.
